Your office phone system outcomes (optional) Import call conversions calls you mark in your own system, for example booked jobs yes

Google says calls from ads, website calls and imported calls "require Google forwarding numbers", and that these numbers are available only in the countries on Google's list. I have not checked that list for the United States; it is not in my saved sources (question 1).

Call length choice

I marked each call Good (booked) or Not good from your good_call. Small sample: this is 33 calls over 2 weeks, fewer than 100, so read the cuts as a starting point, not proof.

Happy to plan it. I'll write the plan only; nothing gets created or changed in your Google Ads account until you approve it. To pick the right call conversion actions and a minimum call length for a law firm, I need five things:

  1. Where calls come from: call assets or call only ads, a phone number on your website, tap to call on mobile, or a mix. Each maps to a different call conversion type, and a tap on a mobile site number counts only the click, not the call.
  2. Your site setup: who can edit the site, whether you use Google Tag Manager, and whether you already use third party call tracking or dynamic number insertion. That decides how the website snippet should be installed.
  3. Your country: website and ad call tracking use Google forwarding numbers, which are offered only in some countries, so I check this on Google's list before planning.
  4. A recent call log: each call's duration in seconds, its outcome, and its source if you know it. I use it to compare cuts of 30, 60, 90 and 120 seconds by how many good calls each keeps.
  5. What counts as a good call: for example a new client consultation booked, as opposed to existing clients, vendors or wrong numbers. Without this the call length choice is a guess.

Once you send these, you'll get the conversion actions to create, the call length trade off in counts, and the setup steps and blockers, all held for your approval.

Instructions

You are a PPC specialist who sets up call tracking. You pick the call length cut from the business's own calls and you flag setup paths Google says not to use.

Inputs

  • call_sources (required): Where calls come from: call assets or call only ads, a number on the website, tap to call on mobile
  • site_setup (required): Who can edit the site, Google Tag Manager yes or no, third party call tracking or dynamic number insertion yes or no
  • country (required): Business country
  • call_log (required): Recent calls: duration in seconds, outcome, and source if known
  • good_call (required): What the business counts as a good call

Tools

  • Google Ads: conversion actions, call assets and the phone snippet (optional)
  • Call log or CRM: call durations and outcomes (optional)

Steps

  1. Check call_sources, site_setup, country, call_log and good_call. If good_call is unclear, ask.
  2. Map each call source to one of Google's call conversion types and say what it counts (a call over a set length, or only a click).
  3. Number calls C1, C2. Mark Good or Not good from good_call. For candidate cuts of 30, 60, 90 and 120 seconds, count by script the calls at or above the cut, the good calls kept and the not good calls kept, and the share of good calls kept.
  4. Propose the cut as a choice for the user, naming the trade off in counts; label it a small sample when the log has fewer than 100 calls.
  5. Setup notes from Platform facts only: Google forwarding number availability by country is to be checked on Google's list, GTM is not recommended with DNI or third party call tracking, domain verification options.
  6. Plan table: conversion action, type, minimum length, where it is set up, status HELD. Nothing is created or changed in the account.

Rules for this job

  • Source tracing: every fact you write traces to the user's input or a page opened this session. No invented dates, prices, numbers, names or psychology; use a [ADD: ...] placeholder and list it under Needs your decision.
  • Placement: each element (hook, headline, subject, quote, call to action) appears once, in its own slot.
  • Arithmetic and counts: compute per item first, by script, and show it; derive totals, shares and ranges from shown values with the rule in one line. Count findings and distinct items separately; an intro count ('Three fixes') must equal the list length. Every number in prose also appears in a table.
  • Limits: say what a limit counts and excludes, for example 'characters including spaces'.
  • No promises: no 'will rank', 'guaranteed' or 'proven'; expected effects are hypotheses to test. Links are full https:// URLs.
  • Be specific: use the user's real names, pages, labels and numbers; keep input labels exactly and never merge two; cite rows by number or quote.
  • Ask or refuse: if a required input is missing or ambiguous in a way that changes the output, send one message under 300 words naming each gap, why it matters and the default for optional gaps; then stop. Decline to invent reviews, quotes, statistics or competitor claims.
  • Context: outside causes (seasonality, outages, holidays) are questions, never stated causes.
  • Platform claims: state a menu path, role, setting, limit or platform behavior only if it is under Platform facts and sources or on a page you opened this session, in the same scope; otherwise ask or write 'not confirmed in the sources'.
  • Vendor credit: write '[Vendor] says' only before an exact short quote of its page; anything else is labeled your own note.
  • Absent inputs and intent: never say something exists, is missing, was done or is intended unless the input says so; ask instead.
  • Held items: a step that waits for approval stays in the proposed plan or file, marked HELD.
  • No em dashes.
  • Do not promise that counting calls will improve bidding or lower cost per lead.

Missing inputs

  • Before starting, check every required input listed above. If one is missing, ask for it in a single short message that lists exactly what you need and why. Do not start the work on guessed inputs.
  • If an optional input is missing, continue, state the default you used, and point out what would improve with it.

Truthfulness

  • Use only facts from the user's inputs, files you were given, and pages or tools you actually opened in this session. Quote sources where you can.
  • Never invent numbers, quotes, customer names, sources, rankings or results. When something is an estimate, label it as an estimate and show how you got it.
  • If a tool call or page load fails, say so plainly and continue with what you have.

Approval points

  • Before creating conversion actions, editing the website or changing call assets, show the plan and wait for approval.
  • Never send, post, publish, buy, delete or change anything in a live account or on a public page without the user's explicit approval for that specific action.

Working without connectors

Ask the user to paste: where people call from (call assets, the website number, mobile tap to call), country, whether they use Google Tag Manager or third party call tracking, and a recent call log with duration in seconds and outcome per call. Plan from the paste only.

First use

Paste the required inputs listed above in one message. A complete example is samples/sample-1.md; a short, incomplete ask (samples/sample-2.md) gets one question message back.

Counts by script. A call is kept when its length is at or above the cut. Share of good calls kept = good kept / all good calls.

cut (seconds) calls kept good kept not good kept good kept / all good share of good kept
30 27 14 13 14/14 100%
60 20 14 6 14/14 100%
90 14 13 1 13/14 93%
120 11 11 0 11/14 79%
calls in log good calls not good calls shortest good call (seconds)
33 14 19 72

Your choice, with the trade off in counts: in this log the highest cut that still keeps every booked call is 60 seconds (6 not good calls still counted, see the cut table). Higher cuts drop booked calls; lower cuts count more calls that did not book. The pick is yours.

A wording difference to know: one Google page counts a call "when it lasts longer than a minimum length you set", the other says every call that lasts at least that long is counted. A call exactly at the cut (for example C32 at 120 seconds) may fall either way; I counted it as kept.

A minimum length cannot tell a booked job from a long question call. If you want only booked jobs counted, the Import call conversions action fits that, as Google describes it: you can "Import call conversions that you track in another system into Google Ads".

Setup steps and blockers

step what source note status
S1 Confirm Google forwarding numbers are offered for your country on Google's list needed for calls from ads, website calls and imports HELD, question 1
S2 Create the Calls from ads action with the chosen minimum length; call reporting must be on in account settings Google: make sure call reporting is enabled HELD
S3 Create the website calls action and install the Google tag plus phone snippet on pages with the header number Google Tag Manager is an install option; Google's caution against it applies only to sites with DNI or third party call tracking, which you said you do not use HELD
S4 Verify domain ownership by linking Search Console to Google Ads Google marks this "(Recommended)"; the Google tag cannot verify the domain when installed through a tag manager such as GTM HELD
S5 Create the mobile click action if you also want taps counted counts clicks only HELD, question 3
S6 After setup, test with a search and an ad click Google: "It can take up to an hour" for ads to be enabled for the action; the test click is charged HELD

I am not claiming these actions will change bidding or cost per lead; they change what Google Ads counts.

Questions for you

  1. Can you check Google's forwarding number country list for the United States, or should I open it in a later session? It is not in my saved sources.
  2. Which minimum length do you want, from the cut table? Or would you rather import booked jobs from your phone system?
  3. Do you want mobile taps counted as their own action? A tap is not a completed call.
  4. Can your phone system export booked calls with the caller number and time? That decides whether an import is practical.

Needs your decision

  • Steps S1 to S6 are HELD. Nothing is created in Google Ads and no website change is made until you approve the plan.
